Welcome to Thunderstang.com, the official launchpad for a build that blends factory oddities, underrated powerplants, and sheer automotive stubbornness.
This isn’t your typical V8 Mustang project. I’m starting with a 1987 Mustang LX convertible — originally a 2.3L naturally aspirated car — and transforming it using guts from a 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, including its factory 2.3L turbocharged engine and 5-speed T5 manual transmission.
For those keeping score at home, yes — this is the same Lima-based turbo engine that powered the Mustang SVO, one of the most misunderstood and underappreciated performance cars Ford ever made.
Why the 2.3 Turbo?
Because it’s different. Because it’s light. And because, when built right, it’ll lay waste to expectations.
The 2.3L turbo might not get the spotlight like the 5.0L crowd, but with forged internals, a proper turbo upgrade, and modern tuning, it’s more than capable of making 400+ horsepower — and doing it with attitude.
Plus, there’s just something brutally fun about outgunning V8s with a four-cylinder and a giant snail under the hood.
Build Breakdown (So Far)
- Chassis: 1987 Mustang LX vert (originally NA 2.3, auto)
- Engine/Trans: 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 2.3L Turbo + T5
- Rearend: 1990 Mustang GT 8.8” with Cobra-spec hardware
- Goal: 400+ crank HP, streetable manners, maximum fun-per-dollar
This is a full rebuild, not just a bolt-in swap. The engine’s getting forged internals, better flow, modern boost control, standalone or LA3 tuning, and enough fuel and air to keep the turbo honest.
And yes — I know some of you are thinking, “Why not just Coyote swap it?”
Simple answer: because everyone does that.
Thunderstang is for the weirdos who love factory freaks, turbo torque curves, and underdog engineering.
A Bit of Fox Body Trivia…
In 1987, you could special order a Mustang LX convertible with the 2.3L turbo and a manual transmission — the same combo as the SVO and Turbo Coupe. Fewer than 150 of those unicorns were ever made. This isn’t one of them… but it should have been.
So we’re building it now. Louder. Faster. Better.
What to Expect
This site will track every step of the process — from teardown and wiring headaches to dyno runs and final shakedown. You’ll get:
- Detailed build logs
- Tech breakdowns
- Parts reviews
- Turbo tuning rants
- And probably some cursing at old connectors
If you’re into Fox Bodies, oddball factory combos, turbo tech, or just want to watch a forgotten convertible get reborn into something wild — you’re in the right place.
Thanks for joining the ride.
Thunderstang is coming. And it’s going to make some noise.
